Faraday Bag FAQ – Answers from Leblok Security

What is a Faraday bag?

A Faraday bag is a shielded enclosure designed to block wireless signals to and from electronic devices. Once sealed inside, phones, tablets, laptops, or wireless keys are fully isolated from cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, RFID, and NFC signals. This ensures your device cannot be tracked, intercepted, or tampered with while stored.

Why do professionals use Faraday bags instead of simply switching devices off?

Modern devices are never truly “off.” Even when powered down, subsystems can remain active, capable of transmitting or receiving data. Features such as Apple’s Find My service demonstrate this. For professionals handling sensitive operations or data, relying on a power button is inadequate. A Faraday bag provides certainty by eliminating all external connectivity.

What signals do Leblok Security bags block?

Independent laboratory testing confirms that Leblok Security bags block:
Mobile networks (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G)
Wi-Fi (2.4 – 5 GHz)
Bluetooth (2.4 GHz)
Broad spectrum of other HF
GPS (1–2 GHz)
RFID and NFC (13.56 MHz)
Key fob signals
Electromagnetic pulses (EMP), electrostatic discharges (ESD), and solar flare interference

How are Leblok Security bags tested?

Our products are tested to internationally recognised standards, including IEEE 299-2006 for shielding effectiveness. Testing has been performed at independent facilities, including defence laboratories. The results demonstrate shielding effectiveness across a wide spectrum of frequencies, ensuring protection for sensitive devices.

Who benefits from using a Faraday bag?

Leblok Security bags are used by:
Military and law enforcement personnel protecting mission-critical devices
Security services and forensic teams preserving digital evidence
Politicians and journalists safeguarding confidential communications
Cybersecurity professionals managing exposure to tracking and data theft
Private individuals concerned with privacy, vehicle theft, or surveillance

Can a Faraday bag prevent car theft?

Yes. Many modern vehicles use keyless entry systems, and their key fobs continuously broadcast an unlock signal. Criminals can capture and replicate this signal using inexpensive relay devices. Storing your key fob in a Faraday bag prevents this broadcast, making cloning or relay attacks impossible.

Are Faraday bags legal to use?

Yes. Leblok Security products passively block signals. They do not emit or interfere with radio communications, nor do they constitute jamming devices. They are fully legal for personal, professional, and governmental use.

Will my phone alarm still work inside the bag?

Yes. Alarms and timers rely on the device’s internal clock, not external signals. You will still hear your alarm, even while the phone is fully shielded.

Do Faraday bags reduce battery life?

Not usually. Modern smartphones are designed to enter a low-power state when they can’t connect to a network, which means placing them in a Faraday bag often helps conserve battery rather than drain it. However, older devices may continue searching for a signal, which can use more power and slightly reduce battery life.

Can I charge my device while it is inside a Leblok Security bag?

Charging with a cable connected from outside the bag isn’t recommended, as the wire prevents a full seal and can allow some signal leakage. For secure charging, you can place a portable power bank inside the bag with your device – this keeps the shielding intact while still allowing it to charge.

What makes Leblok Security products different?

Leblok Security products are purpose-built with multiple layers of specialised shielding material, combined with durable outer construction for field use. Unlike improvised solutions, they are engineered, tested, and manufactured for reliability under demanding operational conditions. This ensures consistent protection, whether in government use, military, policing, intelligence operations, or personal security.

How do I know if my Faraday bag is working?

A simple test is to place your phone inside, seal the bag, and call it. While the Faraday bag may effectively block cellular calls, WiFi and Bluetooth signals can still leak through if the shielding is incomplete.
To verify its performance, switch on WiFi or Bluetooth on your device, then place it inside the Faraday bag and seal it securely. Using another device such as a laptop or tablet, attempt to detect and connect to the sealed device via Bluetooth or by scanning for it on your WiFi network.
The device should not be visible or establish a connection.

What devices can be protected?

Leblok Security Faraday bags are available in a range of sizes to shield:
Mobile phones
Laptops and tablets
Wireless car keys
External drives and storage media
Access cards and ID badges
Radios and GPS units

What is the expected lifespan of a Faraday bag?

The service life depends on frequency of use and handling. Our products are built with rugged, reinforced seams and weather-resistant outer materials. With proper care, they will provide reliable protection over many years of use.
